Which first dance? An alternative take

July 26, 2016

So I'm currently organising my own wedding - literally, my fiance seems to think these things just happen so it's been down to me - groomzilla - to get stuff done. That means I've been spending a lot of time on various wedding groups and forums.

Of course in among the stuff I really don't care about (she can sort her own bloddy flowers and sparkly wine glasses!) is quite a lot of content on music and the all important first dance.

There's a million blogs and websites out there telling you the "most popular", "most romantic", "most heartfelt" etc... first dances. I'm not going to waste your time and energy doing one of those - we all know what Ed Sheeran and John Legend sounds like just as the previous generations knew what Bryan Adams, Lonestar, Elton John, Eric Clapton and all the token "big" first dance tunes.

I'm instead going to focus on when you might not be sure what you want, but you don't want one of those. I'm in no way saying there's anything wrong with having a popular first dance tune by the way, but variety is the spice of life.

I'm personally having an "alternative" first dance - I'm not saying what it is lest everyone nick it (it really is a banger :D ) but it is quite soppy whilst still being a great tune and unique. It's quite obscure too but those in the know will know, those that don't will still enjoy it because it's a good tune.

That's one way to approach an alternative first dance, the other is to go for something that means something to both of you or brings back a great memory. We do a lot of travelling and got engaged in Iceland so I'll be shoehorning some Sigur Ros into the meal music. We also kind of blossomed our love at Oktoberfest (long story) so we'll maybe have some German drinking tunes, we're just home from Jamaica which we adored so there'll be plenty of reggae.

And if it wasn't for me being so stubborn and pulling the "the music is my thing" card, we'd definitely have one of those songs so have a think - it doesn't need to be popular, it doesn't even need to be something you can dance to but if it means something to you two then it always will and have the added shine that every time you hear it you'll be whisked back to your first dance...

As an aside here's some of the more unique first dances I've played over the past 12 months:

The Gaslight Anthem - Mae

Muse - Please Let Me Get What I Want (Smith's cover)

The Cure - Just Like Heaven

Edwyn Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - Home

The Grease Megamix

To name just a few - they can be as serious or as quirky as they like, as long as it means something to you two then who cares?
